A friend of mine had read this blog a couple of times and advised me to write some reviews of Filipino movies, since I am, obviously a Filipino. It was days back, but it lingered in my mind, just now. I was inside a mall when that happened, and I was like: "Oh, that Vice Ganda movie is out today!?" The heck I gave it a shot.
I wasn't really disappointed with this one, since the uber slight disappointment I felt with Vice Ganda's previous: Petrang Kabayo. It wasn't that funny to my expectations with the film--but this one, is irresistibly funny.
Benjamin is an out gay living happily with his quirky family. Soon terrorists had took over Philippines and the country demanded for more soldiers to fight the terrorists. Benjamin, left no choice but to go instead of his father, has to undergo serious training to take down the evil terrorists, win the battle of the country and save his dear grandfather.--ArmandDC (yep, that's me!)
I would like to say this early of my post that this movie was a really fun and a great movie. I wasn't really a fan of our films (look how hypocrite I am, but it's just true) since the effects are bad, and oh, I must not forget, the evident copied-scripts of some films. (e.g. Forever And A Day from A Walk to Remember). Anyway, I believe this film is original. I really loved how the script is put together. The actors are pretty good too! Everyone had their special comedic timing, like for instance, Vandolph Quizon. His character has his third-eye open, and most of his spoofs involve his deceased father's spirit. Other protagonists have each distinct personality that builds up distinct comedies. I personally loved Vandolph's performance in this one, only that he was out shined by Vice Geanda which was the right thing to happen.
The cinematography, I can't really judge. There wasn't really superb in this, with regards with the creative video-takes. Thanks to the comedy genre, which for me, doesn't demand that much from cinematography.
What I completely loved about this film is the dialogue. If we say "Vice Ganda", we automatically will think about sarcastic punch-lines, sarcastic in a good and funny way. There has to be something in Vice Ganda, because everytime he drops off his punchlines, everyone just end up giggling--not that this really matters.
The effects that required 3D animation were pretty crappy--understandable because I believe that Philippine cinema has a lot of improvements that it can make regarding visual computer generated effects. Moreover, the genre isn't really demanding these kind of stuffs that much compared to other genres. But, I'm not gonna lie, explosions, gunshots and everything detonation were real good.
Lastly, what I appreciate about this film is that it talks about the third sex and their issues socially in the Philippines, in such a decent way, of course using what Filipinos do best, comedy. I have a lot of friends tht belong to the third sex and I really think that this movie right here will be appreciated greater than the previous: "Petrang Kabayo".
One note: there are some scenes that are disturbing to the eye especially to the males. But I thought that only if we will have our mind open, then this movie is outstanding.
All in all, Praybeyt Benjamin is a very fun film to watch. There are some curse words, and some disturbing scenes, so if you will be watching with the kids, guidance is a word to keep in mind. Plus, this movie exposes third-sex issues and highlights the importance and essence of loving one another regardless of their gender.
This movie is a bam! I mean a positive BAM! A great opener for Filipino film reviews in this blogsite. So to close this post, I must give it a 3-FP point rating! That's it, peace out.

thanks for the review. im glad this film is getting some positive reviews... I am intrigued by you saying it is original. I haven't watched the film but from the trailer I gather a gay version of Mulan... hmmm now I think ill watch it... :))
ReplyDeleteAn Online Money,
ReplyDeleteI actually realized it was somehow resembled Mulan. That happened after writing this review. But still, I consider this one, a Filipino original, since it talks about the Philippines in some parts.. something I couldn't see in some of our movies.
The punchlines were really "just the right amount", though some we already heard from Viceral's "Petrang Kabayo".
If you would ask me, this looks totally different because there are a whole broader issues that are talked about the movie. Great point you had there tho. Thanks for dropping in!! =))
